Being creative and forming smart ideas goes further than just putting up some advertising on a website and expecting results. You might find a simple idea that is non-intrusive can make millions faster than a website full of intrusive advertising can make $10. It is important to be smart with monetizing a website rather than looking for a quick solution.

In 2006 FaceBook offered $1 gifts that friends on the network could buy each other. The gifts were just graphic files that would appear once purchased. No virtual exchange exists, but the concept of giving exists here - people feel like they are doing something nice but the gift itself is not real - it’s just a small picture. Other sites have also released online worlds where people can buy clothes, weapons, and tools for their character - all of these are of course virtual and not real, but still cause a great interest from web visitors.

Let’s go back to the FaceBook example for a moment. Consider each gift costs $1 - not a lot, is it? Now consider 30-40 thousand people purchase gifts for each other each week. That’s over $100,000 a month in profits from selling something virtual that was never real. However the developers made it real by being creative - and as a result benefited from using their creative insight.

So how does this help you? Does it mean you should sell virtual goods to have a successful site or service? In part, but more so it means that creative ideas that fill a natural human need or want turn out more successful than those that just look good or have loads of features.

You do not need to sell products or services to create a passive income. In fact this is often a bad idea. OK- let’s add some clarification. You do have to sell something - but it is not a product. You are selling your idea or self-image in the form of a web front. This idea has to be replicated to an almost limitless degree and offer something unique and well-presented to the web audience.

Sounds impossible? Not in the least. Do You have a site with hosting already? If not, you will need one before creating a web presence. Once you have your hosting set-up - which is all automatic - you’ll need to choose a name for your site. Decide on something catchy that is not too long. Once this is done all that will be left is to go into your control panel installer section and choose the type of project you need.

The great thing about the internet is that a lot of aspects of website management are well documented. If you run across something you do not understand, just Google the term or the software name and within minutes you’ll have the answers you need. This is an excellent research asset and not using it is often the reason others fail in achieving their goal.

Once you’ve got your blog, discussion group forum, artwork gallery, or other site set up you’ll need to promote it before making an income from it. The following entries in the coming weeks will discuss promotion.
